Review
Firstly, we should appreciate Siddharth for venturing this script and encouraging a debut director. The film is sure a good attempt by the filmmaker, who has made over the story and script of his award winning short film in the same title – ‘Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Eppadi’!
It is indeed a big risk and that the actor and producer has taken by making this movie as making a short film into a full length feature is not an easy task. Much care should be taken while doing this but the filmmakers failed to understand this and the result is a disappointing output!
The story ‘Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Eppadi’ is simple. How you succeed in love with the experiences of those ‘Sodhappals’ is the crux.
It is the monologue of character Arun (Siddharth) telling how his love relationship, which starts with casual meeting and develops beautifully, with Parvathy (Amala Paul) went off-track because of those ‘Sodhappals’ (mistakes due to misunderstanding) he made. Whether the broken love relationship of these Engineering College students, Arun and Parvathy, is patched up and the lovers join hands again as lovers is told in the end. The failing marriage of Parvathy’s parents who go to the extent of divorcing, Arun’s friend Cathy (S S Music Pooja) love triangle and the classmate ‘Anna’ love affair are told interestingly.
Siddharth and Amala Paul’s performances are not up to the mark, though Siddharth has tried his best to do some justice, Amala Paul’s sometimes looks ‘she is acting’!
Yesteryear actor Suresh (as Akilan, father of Amala Paul) and Ravi Raghavender have given a neat performance. And, the acting of the bubbly guy (Siddharth classmate), who offers ‘love advices’ to his friends is the only big solace in the film as he keeps audience in splits with his dialogues and with the slaps he gets from girls.
Director Balaji Mohan scripted and directed the short film with much ease but he failed to understand that feature film requires something more than what a short film required. The script oscillates and confuses at certain points and the lead characters played by Siddharth and Amala Paul irritates us with their repeated whining and fights.
The director should have done proper home work keeping in mind that he was working for a feature film. A big strength for this film is the dialogues. You sure can hear laughter and claps in the hall at regular intervals. Thanks to the sarcastic and witty bits.
Music by Thaman is another big disappointment. Not only the songs the background score is also not up to the mark, in fact at some places it tests our patience. Nirav Shah’s camera work too has nothing special to mention. Editing by T S Suresh could have reduced the drag.
Y Not Studios and Etaki Entertainment of Siddharth in association with Nirav Shah have produced the film. A good attempt, but a big damp squib made by stalwarts.
‘Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Eppadi’ is for young generation and for those with young hearts. Youngsters may do a repeated watch otherwise this film is a one-time-watch movie!
Irrespective of those Sodhappals’ by the makers you can still watch ‘Kadhalil Sodhappuvatu Eppadi’ to get a different experience.
